I have been coming to Peaks Of Otter my whole life, since the 1960's, and now bring my wife here. This is one of the best campgrounds on the east coast, in my opinion. It does not have many of the fancy features of other campgrounds nor many of the attractions but it has serenity and relaxation which are unmatched. Only Big Meadows, on the Skyline Drive, comes close to matching it but Big Meadows is far larger and FAR too overcrowded.
If you are making a reservation at PoO then you do need to be aware that it is an older campground. I see where some people complain that it does not have "modern amenities" like showers or "hook ups" (in the camper loop). I'll go a step further, since I have gotten older and have had to switch to hauling a "hotel room on wheels" (camper trailer) around with me, I have discovered that the Peaks of Otter camper loop is narrow, very tight, hard to maneuver in and the sites are SMALL. I do not recommend bringing anything more than 27 foot here. People do...but I do not recommend it. All of that said, I would not change a thing other than to fix some potholes. The campground is fine the way it is.
Coming to Peaks of Otter takes us back to a simpler, more peaceful time. we can sit outside and enjoy the cool mountain breezes, let out dog play around the campfire or ride down to the nearby apple orchard. If you are younger, and your legs work (lol) there is Sharp Top, Buzzards Roost and Harkening Hill to climb and I strongly recommend you do so. Especially Sharp Top itself.
To sum up. Come to Peaks of Otter to simply relax in a bit of nature. Do not come expecting fancy "modern conveniences." You'll enjoy it. Oh, and the price is great too.
