Beautiful and large campsites. Noise from the road echoed across the lake, especially motorcycles.

We love camping at Horsethief lake. The location is absolutely beautiful and each site has a wonderful tree canopy. The toilets were standard vault toilets. Well cleaned but can get smelly if fellow campers dont shut the lid. Only thing that would make this spot better is a place to shower off.

The campsites were very nice, no excess trash or issues like that. Although it would have been nice if it was clearer on the website that the bathrooms were just a whole in the ground and that there weren’t showers. Also the park attendant was honestly the exact opposite of hospitable. He was condescending when we were checking in. Made us feel like we wouldn’t have enough parking even though we had paid for two campsites to ensure we would get 4 vehicles worth of parking (there were 6 of us in 3 cars). And the second day we were there and we returned from being out during the day we drove past the camp entrance and he chased us down to yell at us for coming in the “wrong way” past the front entrance even though the car in front of us did the same thing and to yell at us for driving too fast even though we were driving the posted 10 miles per hour.

We enjoyed our stay in this campground, the campsite was super clean, big, a little close to the next one but not bad, the pit toilets where not very clean and didn’t had hand sanitizer.
The lake was a few steps away, the camp host was nice, and you can get ice and wood there.
The closest place with Verizon coverage was Mt Rushmore and Keystone.

I return to Horse Thief Lake every year with a school group going to the Pine Ridge Reservation for a mission trip. We stay at Horse Thief Lake from 5 to 8 days depending on the year and scheduled reservation service work. The campground hosts are amazing, are very attentive to campers needs, quiet time is strictly enforced, and the sites are all beautiful and well-maintained. We tend to choose the sites at the top, as the view of the lake is spectacular. I have been coming to Horse Thief Lake many years prior to beginning to take students on mission trips. When I’m in the Black Hills, I will camp nowhere else!

Super close to Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, and Custer Stater Park. Incredible central location in the Black Hills, with well-maintained sites and facilities, ready with ice and firewood in case you need more during your visit!
