The cabin is spacious and beautiful! My favorite part was watching the fog roll down the lake and over the dam in the morning. The great room has an amazing view!

Very fun and cozy spot for a winter cabin stay! No issues with critters, they must have all been asleep or frozen. Took the advice of someone in the log book and closed the door to the sleeping quarters, cranked both wood stoves, and camped in the main area! Very well stocked with wood and kitchen supplies and all propane worked great. We were able to drive up to the gate, which was a huge bonus. Such beautiful scenery with the lake frozen over and the snowy mountains in the background. Not a bad drive for us to ski at Lost Trail during the day either! Can't wait to come back.

There are so many great things about this cabin. It's spacious, private, beautiful views, and so much more! But the rats... They were so loud that my kids didn't sleep either night we were there. We ended up hanging out in the cabin during the day and sleeping in our car night (all 5 of us, ha!). We are Montana natives and have camped at Lake Como many times. We are use to critters, but the whole ceiling was alive at night. Hopefully there can be a long term solution to this ongoing problem. All that said, we hope to be back! The cabin was well kept and clean otherwise. Lots of firewood and well stocked with canes and kitchen supplies. The lake views are worth the furry friends. A 7 year old's account: I loved it. It was kind of spooky when we first got there because we got there at night, but the next day we loved it. We brought games and played them. There is a rat named Steve and he ate our brownies. Make sure he doesn't get your brownies. When it was night time we slept in our car and the next day we played Simon says for a little bit. Then we roasted marshmallows and we went down to the lake for the last time. When we went to get the last things, we heard Steve again. We wrote in the book, so make sure you do too. P.S. There are lots of flies.

Beautiful place. Very smoky out while we were there but wonderful cabin. Definitely a lot of mice in the cabin, keep all food put up at night cause they are all over. Will be back for sure!

not much privacy around the cabin. there are a lot of visitors that camp out for the day in front of the cabin and walk through the yard throughout the day and evening. a beautiful area but not much peace and quiet

Felt like a remake of The Big Chill, wonderful experience, excellent camp volunteers and rangers. A magical place I hope to return to soon.

Love this cabin. It is, however large and therefore difficult to heat. There were 2 broken windows when we were there in late January, which contributed to that issue. We hiked to the waterfall at the other end of the lake, which was gorgeous!

Beautiful, rustic cabin with plenty of wood to burn. We loved just sitting on the deck and listening to the birds. We heard no rustling of mice at night, and by keeping our food on a table between the kitchen and main room (a method described by another guest in the logbook) we had no issues with critters getting into our food. Tip for the deck: the wood slats are further apart on the left side of the deck near the kitchen, and small feet tend to fall through. We found the right side deck boards were more compact and safer.
We can’t wait for our next stay at this cabin!

Nice location, spacious cabin. However, I have stayed in numerous Forest Service cabins over the last several years and the Woods cabin was very sparsely furnished. Other than folding chairs and dining table chairs there were only two chairs that were useable in the main room. There was an additional arm chair that was missing one arm and springs were poking through the seat. Also, the kitchen was very poorly equipped. A trip to a thrift store could probably remedy that. Since there were only two of us it worked out. However if someone was to book it for a group of twelve, like what it is indicated in the description it would not be very comfortable.

Lots of cut wood... rained most of the day and everyone stayed warm and enjoyed the views and the quiet....

The cabin was so much cleaner than it was last year! The kitchen, especially, looked like it had been well cleaned (we were prepared to never go into the kitchen from our experience the previous year). Good job to whoever was there before us. The wood supply this year was so much better than last....some of it was even split. And, all of it was very dry! Not much snow and way too warm for skiing, the lake was no longer frozen for skiing. However, we were able to hike to the falls and had a great time!

I love this place. It feels like home. Its rustic and you should expect a cabin experience. We are lucky to have access to this and experience a few days of life on Lake Como. The open layout and views make the experience feel magical.

Both wood stoves gaskets were broken. It was December and I had 3 youngsters with me 6,7 and 7. We had to abandon ship and go home.

The prior renters were 5 that didn't report the problems to the Darby ranger station ( more then likely broken by these a-hole because they didn't report the problems ). THANKS - ELIZABETH, AUBRY, SAWYER, LIAM, QUINN and RYYS ( you know who you are! )

PLEASE ALWAYS REPORT NEEDEDREPAIRS ASAP SO THIS DOSENT HAPPEN TO OTHERS and please be kind restocking wood and kindling for the next renter.... Always leaving the cabins better the you found them.

This is an honor system folks If we all do our part, we can preserve these cabins for the generations to come.

Three stars for the amazing views! wish we could have enjoyed them.

bring battery lights if you are there at night. keep shoes on when on the porch...seems like nobody takes care of the old cabin.... beware of wood stove by bedrooms... views are great and the squirrels are fun inside and out.

Such a soulful spot. Plenty of room with lovely views and access to an easy 3+- mile hike to a waterfall.
We did a pretty thorough cleaning- the place really needed it. It felt good leaving it better than we found it and hope that notion continues.
All but one of the propane lights were outside our skill range to light - assuming operator error here. The kitchen stove is unreliable and slightly scary but it works. Beware that the front burners are never really off. The lack of firewood was a bit concerning since it snowed almost the whole time, but we burned lots of bark and wished for a tool to break down the huge rounds. I’m sure when there’s plenty of wood people burn a lot of it.

This spot is a gift and I hope with all the folks visiting, they embrace leaving the place clean - “Leave No Trace” ethics apply here.
Thankful for the opportunity to stay and have this experience. 💙

We have rented many many USFS cabins and lookouts over the years. They are always a treasure. It’s so much fun exploring new areas. This particular stay was....less than ideal. Beautiful cabin, beautiful location. The problem was that there wasn’t ANY dry wood. The only wood available was in gigantic rounds and soaking wet. I’m pretty sure it had sat all winter uncovered. We ended up spending $60+ buying wood in town in order to keep even one fireplace going and it was still freezing inside. There are serious gaps around all of the doors that could use a little TLC. Okay, we can deal with that. Then, the propane stove had a gas leak. We turned it on and NOTHING would light, yet we could smell the propane leaking out. Left windows and doors open forever to air it out and shut everything down. My husband actually installs gas lines and he suspected packrat damage (the one living in the kitchen - gross). We attempted to cook outside and on the fireplace with our cast iron pots and it worked but was less than ideal. Typically I precook a lot of our food before these stays if its rustic but I had expected a stove to use. Oh well. The biggest issue for me was the firewood. The expense of staying is getting higher and not having firewood available (that is supposed to be there) is kind of a pain.

Very nice place but every time I have been there the prior renters have cleaned almost nothing. Get it together people. There is no cleaning service that follows you. Wipe things down, sweep and mop. Don't be losers.

The cabin was great! Clean and welcoming. We were disappointed in the availability of wood. It seems as though the nightly rate should include the wood needed. Everything else was fantastic!

Lovely spacious cabin on the lake. Lots of windows for ventilation on hot days; tough to heat on cold nights.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
