One of the most beautiful places I have ever been, even though the rain and cloudy weather! Unmatched views, beautiful stars and up close interactions with wildlife. The wind definitely howls loud at hight, so prepare yourself for that. Would come back in a heartbeat!

Everything was wonderful for our October stay at the lookout, except for the temperature. It was cold so we slept in our sleeping bags on the bunk beds. The 360* view was amazing. We timed our stay for a full moon night. There is no power or running water. There is a set of bunk beds with mattresses, just bring your own twin bedding or sleeping bags. There is a seat height table top with drawers you can use to spread out your stuff. There is a dining table with two chairs. The vault toilet is near the parking area. It’s a long drive in from the highway but it’s a really good dirt/gravel road. The Crazy Woman Canyon Road is nearby. It’s a beautiful canyon drive. Another must see in the Bighorn Mountains. We are planning on going back to stay at the lookout. We had zero complaints.

It was amazingly beautiful! Memories for a lifetime!
There were just a few things that might have been nice to know the place was open to the public as there were several people there. It was fine - just to be given a heads up would have been nice.
Also, there were several menacing looking spiders in the place. I didn't want to kill them - but no way to know if they were poisonous. We ended up pitching our tent in the middle to keep the spiders out. It worked perfect. The view were absolutely breathtaking and everything else was perfect!

My Husband & I were delighted with our stay on Sheep Mtn. The views were gorgeous! The place was clean! Cell service was awesome if you needed to use it! Most enjoyable! Steven & Cathy Martinovich

We were shocked with how "public" this firewatch is. So many people at all hours of the day! Some of them are nice and respect the privacy of the firewatch renters, others walk right up to the entrance door and stare at you through the windows. If you're looking for privacy this isn't the lookout for you. The scenery is nice, though.

The lookout is nice and well-maintained (including one of the cleanest vault toilets I've ever seen), and I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I will warn you though - it does get quite windy, and you should expect some visitors every hour or two even during the week!

The view was very pretty, but that was it. There is NO heat whatsoever in the tower. The wind blew non-stop 50+ MPH the whole time. The outhouse reeked, and sewage was almost up to the bottom of the toilet. I've stayed in 3 other cabins and a lookout tower in Montana, and this was by far the worst one I've ever been in. The walls, windows, and door draft cold air really super awful, and the roof panels around the catwalk rattle and bang non-stop in the wind, even after tightening them myself. Don't go up there unless you are geared up with -40 degree Arctic Sleeping Bags, and your own heat source and cooking source. The forrest service lookout tower I stayed at last time had a wall mounted propane furnace, propane kitchen stove, refrigerator, and propane lighting, and was warm and toasty, and was actually enjoyable, so why can't this one have that? Also, be prepared for high altitude sickness, and have a 4WD vehicle. Will not be back to that one anytime soon...

I have lived in the area for 14 years. I always take out of state visitors to the lookout and comment, “It would be fun to stay here overnight.” Finally got my lucky chance. Arrived before sunset to set up to a clean cabin. We had a full moon, stars and warm breezes to sit and gaze from the catwalk. Read creative journal entries, played cards into the night surrounded by mountain views. Morning brought storm winds and imaginations of rangers spending long shifts on fire lookout. For those visiting, the location gives a great base camp for touring the big horn area.

Great 360 degree views. You have a clear view of the stars at night. Very peaceful. Bring your own chairs as there are only 2 and one of them was broken. It is roomier than you would think. The only big negative is the constant 30 mph wind.

The ATV groups on the 4th of July weekend give ATV owners a bad reputation. Constant traffic, ATVs, dirt bikes, motorcycles, trucks, suvs, from dawn to after dusk. Rude. Inconsiderate. Thank goodness for the 5 foot signs posted by the Forest Service asking visitors to give Lookout renters privacy and to stay off the catwalk. That stopped some. Others visitors had to be constantly directed away. Shooed off the stairs. The signs couldn't have been clearer or in more prominent locations. At one point during the day we counted 30 vehicles on top. Approximately 70 or more people. One group wanted to come up and take graduation photos. We think an excuse, not dressed for any type of memorable photo shoot and then were mad we wouldnt agree. Another group set their drone off and circled the tower closely getting several feet away from us for 15-20 minutes. Spying in the windows. Buzzing us while we sat on the catwalk. One group came up blaring the soundtrack to MamaMia and left it going fullblast while they had a picnic for an hour. Serenading the 70 or so others who were up at the summit. Loud. Loud. Loud. And others came up to check their cell phone at night (we had sporadic, very sporadic cell coverage) and left their headlights on and shining into the tower.
Obviously COVID 19 concerns made us a little hesitant to use the toilet. Other towers have had locking toilets for sole use of the lookout occupants. With this many ATV visitors up to the summit we understand that you don't want folks to make the woods their bathroom, but it would be nice to have a separate facility for lookout occupants.
We had stayed here 2 years previous on Labor Day weekend. That trip we saw one truck who came up to check the view but turned around when they saw someone staying in the tower. Such a different experience. It's a great place. Well preserved. Cherish this place. Thanks volunteers! Night stars, sunsets, sunrises. Just don't go on a weekend or the 4th.

My mom and I spent three amazing nights here in September. The weather was stellar (although the wind at night really made the tower rattle which I thought was cool) and the stars were something to see. A couple of items to note: you likely will not have the place to yourself on a weekend or during hunting season (when we were there) but most people are pretty respectful that you are renting the tower. Also, bring MREs or some sort of supplemental food if you don't have a Coleman as there is no way to prepare hot food in the tower (the stove is unhooked). This is an awesome place to stay as the views are killer to say the least. The trip up the road isn't bad either and is a nice ride in the woods; the road is well maintained; however, you may need to pull over to let someone pass (or vice versa). I'd stay here again in a second; really hated to go to be honest.

Unique fun! A beautiful location, comfortable. Wanted to find area map and directional guides to better know the lay of the land. Hope to spend time there again.

This is an extremely unique experience that is really beautiful and fun! It’s easier to get up there than expected; the roads are in very good condition and it’s a pretty drive. A small school bus came in behind us for a visit so you may not have the place to yourself, but you do at night. Full disclosure though, there was such a major lightening storm coming, we chickened out spending the whole night up there. I’m sure it would’ve been amazing to be up there at that time, but no thanks. Anyway, give it a try before these overlooks are no longer available.
