Close to Boquillas canyon trail, Boquillas crossing into MX(need passport to cross), and hot springs trail.1 hr 20 mins drive to Santa Elena canyon. Sounds long but you enjoy the scenery of the drive.Does not have as much traffic as Chisos area but nice to have quiet area.Convince store and gas station pretty much in the same area so its very convenient.Camp sites back yard is the Rio Grand river which is pretty cool.Wild life seen was coyotes and roadrunners. Heard havalinas but didnt see them. Animals stayed away from people and tents as long as food was kept in bear boxes. Would definitely stay here again.

The national park itself is very nice. We found that the unimproved roads were very hard on our vehicles. Its amazing that a park like this has that many unimproved roads. Additionally, the park is very large and drive times to get to main attractions require lots of extra planning. Cell signal is marginal. The group D campsite has a ridiculously long hike from the parking spaces to the campsite. Especially if you have lots of camping gear and equipment that you typically use at a primitive campsite, the wildlife that we encountered at our campsite include roadrunners, javelinas, wild steer and coyotes. You absolutely cannot leave food out, and the park does not allow anything to hang from trees. This includes hammocks, solar, powered lights, and a hang line for drying clothes. this specific site would be good for a group of backpackers, it is not very conducive for families camping with young children. In preparation for the camping trip we checked Weather on multiple sources before we left. Unfortunately a storm with 30 mile an hour winds and 50 mile an hour gust came through and pretty much demolished our campsite. The temperature dropped every night 40.Dont forget that if you would like to shower on your trip, each shower cost two dollars in quarters for five minutes and we found that if you didnt have cash to swap in for quarters you are out of luck. This is ridiculous, given that most state parks have free showers, and other accommodations. All of this to be said, we very much enjoyed our hike to balancing rock plan to put on sunscreen as there is no shade, and its a little bit longer than you initially anticipate walking in the desert. The springs are definitely worth a trip, potentially more than once, we enjoyed going around 715 at night and enjoy the sunset. Keep in mind you may want to leave before the sun completely sets as the road is a little narrow. Lastly, the lost mine trail is well worth the 6am wake up call. Sunrise was great!

The biggest disappoint was that the showers/washing machine area did not have a change machine. If you didn't have $2 in quarters, and it was after 5pm you could not get a shower because there is no change machine to provide quarters and the store was closed to provide change. The NPS should not be this cheap. Get a change machine for the Rio Grande Village Campground!
