The campground needs to be re-named Mesquite Campground. A fire came through years ago and burn the cottonwood trees so there is not as much shade. Camp site 14 has good morning shade.Camp site 21 has both shade and morning.

We enjoyed our stay at Cottonwood. We loved our time in Big Bend. Especially loved Santa Elena canyon. But, we did wonder why generators aren't allowed.

The campsite was always very clean, no trash to be seen, the grill was even very clean. Large bear box and large picnic table. The camp host kept the camp in tip top shape. The rest rooms were kept clean, they did not stink. What else could you want from a primitive camp site? Good job.

Not an attractive campground. Having water access is great yet not real helpful being non-potable everywhere but at the campground entrance.

Very beautifull location. If we can't use geerator at all, it will conveniant to have electricity!

This was a lovely campground. The sites were very spacious and the dogs loved all the grass. We went the last week it was open so it was getting a bit warm but I'm very glad we chose to stay here vs. Chisos. We drove through the other campgrounds and this was by far the quietest and most spacious of the three at Big Bend. The bathrooms were kept very clean (other than the bat family that like to hang out here at night lol) and the campground caretaker was very knowledgeable and checked in both mornings we were there. Big Bend is a must see park and if you can get a spot here book it asap! We had to move spots after one night because I couldn't get 2 consecutive nights but it was worth it!

Cottonwood is by far the smallest group camp site and felt very private. Nice trees and lawn (in December). Very attentive camp host.

Despite some damage from a 2019 fire, Cottonwood remains green with lots of birdlife. The host on duty was very vigilant, regularly driving the camping oval to make sure everything was alright. The campground's proximity to Santa Elena canyon, the Castolon Historic District, and some short trails to interesting old farm ruins were its primary attractions to me. I was surprised to get good text and cellphone coverage on some of the hills along the trails! There's filtered water available at the entrance and clean vault toilets toward the rear end of the oval. Some large mature cottonwoods have been cut down and new saplings planted so there's not as much shade as I had hoped for, but Cottonwood's smaller size and remoteness meant it was quiet with its own charm.

Great birding spot, clean and safe camping area. Close to hiking and 4 wheel drive roads. Good place to camp if you have dogs along and can't hike on the trails as you can bird and walk in the immediate area as well.

It is as close to boondocking as you can get without boondocking. Buy a map. Make your reservations early. Check the weather.

This site was pretty nice - when in Big Bend, it's nice when you can camp on grass and not have to worry about large rocks. This site didn't have much shade though so you might have to move your chairs around to get shade in neighboring sites...
