What a fabulous get away! Easy walk/hike in, with no elevation. Very well stocked cabin. Will definitely go again!

Fantastic, wintery trip! The cabin was toasty, almost too warm!, during a cold night. Well appointed with necessities and other things to enjoy

Thoroughly enjoyed the time at the cabin. However, I would warn others that the creek channel has changed at the trailhead which makes for a challenging creek crossing or a significant wade.

What a fantastic gem of a spot. Very well maintained cabin in a beautiful setting. Plenty of dry firewood, very nice wood stove and propane cook stove, plenty of pots and pans and other cooking utensils, chairs, sleeping pads, and games! We will most definitely be back. Thank you USFS Beaverhead Deerlodge NF, Wisdom Ranger District!

We love the quaint May Creek cabin!!! The new wood stove works GREAT!! Thank you! And, the new mattresses are very nice also. The dry firewood (vs green wood from years past) was a plus also. We had a wonderful 2 nights at the cabin. We skied up valley on our layover day, ate well, played some games and enjoyed our time off grid!

Enough snow to ski in! Very cold at night. The cabin is all open underneath, so it takes a bit with that tiny stove to get things warmed up, even with leftover heat from the previous guests. The new stove doesn't have a damper (?) and the wood is dense, but once you get a really hot bed of coals, it's toasty. Caught one mouse, but the cabin was very clean. Laid fresh tracks on a long ski and enjoyed our time in the woods!

I love returning to this little oasis- so peaceful. We went for Easter Weekend and there was full snow cover, great for snowshoeing. However there were some loosely packed sections that we sunk through even with snowshoes! I imagine in the coming weeks you'll be able to access the cabin with hiking boots alone. Otherwise, I am always amazed with how well cared for this cabin is by the people who use it. Let's keep it up! Looking forward to my visit next year!

May Creek cabin is a special place and I always look forward to coming back the next year. I am glad to see that people are taking care of this unique structure. Trees burned by the Trail Creek fire are starting to fall in the upper May Creek drainage and make skiing up the drainage challenging.

We have rented the May Creek cabin several times in the past years. What a disappointment to find the wood shed full of green wood ! We heat solely with wood at home so we are quite experienced with wood stove operation, it’s pretty frustrating to get heat out of wet/green wood. In the past we have been guilty of getting tag cabin too warm . Also the provided propane cook stove leaks propane where the bottle screws on so could not use it . The “back up “ stove is just a pile of junk parts . Lost a lot of faith in the USFS after this trip.

This was my first time to the May Creek Cabin. What a nice structure in a beautiful setting. The people who stayed the night before left everything in immaculate condition.

Great cabin! From the highway this is a 2.5 mile ski in, annnd it’s non-motorized! What a place, enjoy!

The good:
1 room cabin with 2 bunk beds and mattress pads. No ladders to climb into upper bunks though.
Very peaceful and serene.
Nice island dining table with cool branches supporting and bench seats.
Good equipped kitchen.
Wood stove.
Both battery and propane canister lanterns.
Clothes lines with hangers.
2 burner propane camp stove but you need to bring propane.
Fairy light string and solar LUCI LED lights have been left.
Curtains on 2 of the windows. The one without has nice view of May Creek and meadow.
Nice porch and fire pit.
Picnic bench.
May Creek flows by and is surprising deep for wading or cooling off in summer. Some small trout.
Old school pit toilet with modern seats and moon cut out on door. Fun supplied Styrofoam cut out to insulate the cold seat.
As usual the Wisdom Ranger District has supplied emergency supplies and tools for the cabin. Something we have not seen with any other district we have been to.
The bad:
Upon arrival to trail some horseback riders were returning so had to look for horse poop for first mile. Not sure if this is standard practice.
Easy walk but several downed trees over trail and grass has overgrown spots.
At the beginning there is a bridge across part of May Creek but another part just past the bridge you have to scramble over cut up logs to stay dry. Another bridge would be nice.
No sink in cabin but there is a dish pan.
We have Verizon and we had no service. While some are happy to leave that behind those who have an emergency or are always kind of working this is an issue. There was 4bar LTE service about 12.9 miles east of the campground on Hwy 43 or a couple of bars at Chief Joseph Pass 11 miles west on 43.
The combination did not work on the wood shed. Not sure if it is busted or they do not all access to wood until colder weather.
Was one of the last affordable cabins at $25 for a cheap getaway but soon to be $45.

Sweet cabin in beautiful setting. Users should know in advance though that the woodstove is very problematic. It has a very small box and a broken door seal. This means it takes hours, yes hours, to get a bank of coals. And even then you have to feed it constantly and it never gets the cabin super warm. Wish the Forest Service would get a different, more adequate, stove. If they did Id give a 5 star rating for sure.

Previous occupants did a fabulous job cleaning!! Stove takes a while to heat up-would recommend bringing newspapers, etc. Log bridge at first creek crossing is a bit dicey until it freezes. In spite of the fires, it had been pretty well bucked out. With many more wind blown/downfall trees, this may be a difficult ski this year.

Trail was in good condition. The beaver dams did create a new creek, but some logs on the trail, directly after the bridge, made crossing fun and easy. The evening sky was smoke filled from an Idaho fire, but it made for a pretty sunset. Cabin was in fine shape. We'll be going again.

This is an annual event for us and has been for over ten years. May Creek provides some much needed solitude and away time from phones, email and other correspondence. We love it and highly recommend it.

Cabin was clean upon arrival. Dry firewood was available and the overnight stay was very enjoyable.

Lovely hike in to the cabin. Great amenities there, some board games. Great meadow view. Would definitely recommend checking out the Big Hole Battlefield
