What a wonderful, clean, and peaceful retreat the Moose Lake cabin provided during my stay. Everything was very nice upon my arrival, and I appreciate the care taken by those who visited before me. The woodstove was great, and the cabin was well stocked with all the essentials. It was very quiet and offered fantastic views, especially of the night sky. Despite the cold temperatures, the well pump worked well, although I agree with another reviewer and recommend bringing your own water or a way to filter it. There was a lot of sediment in the water. I really enjoyed my stay in this quaint cabin and appreciate the Forest Service for making it available year-round.

I've stayed at this cabin a number of times over the years and it's always a favorite. It's small and very rustic. But if an old fashion line shack is what you are looking for, this fits the bill.

We had a great time. It was myself and my dog. Super easy to get to. There was plenty of fire wood, the cabin was stocked with most kitchen needs. There were plenty of board games. The elk bugled from across the stream/river. A bald eagle perched in the tree the morning we were packing to leave.

Neat clean little cabin that has great access to Fishing and nearby recreational activities. Glad the replaced the mattresses this year. One of the best and easily accessible cabins in the system. Can be rather hot outside at times without nearby shade so bring a pop up canopy. Great access to fishing and hiking.

We absolutely loved this cabin! The stove is definitely the star of the show. Very clean and thoughtfully stocked. We heard Elk bugling. Really enjoyed reading the log entries from all of the visitors. We hope to be back again!

This was our second time at the Moose Lake Cabin. We fully intend to come back as often as possible, and in other seasons. The cabin is well-stocked, the previous renters left it and the surrounding yard, parking area, and vault toilet clean. And we didn't hear or see any signs of mouse activity! You can't beat such a cute, historic cabin so close to great fishing and the recreational opportunities of Moose Lake and the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness. Thank you to the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest for gating the short spur road to the cabin from the main Moose Lake Road. We've stayed in other cabins (*cough* Strawberry Butte near Helena *cough*) where access was wide open and our privacy and security was in doubt at all hours. The Moose Lake Cabin is one of the best accessible USFS rentals in Montana.

Be a good renter and love this cabin. Please do not corral your horses in the cabin yard. There is a huge horse corral next to the cabin for that. Seeing the yard all torn up and poo everywhere was pretty upsetting. Also, please only chop wood by the wood shed. There is no reason to get wood chips all over the place. We last stayed 9/24/21 (See review) for just one night and not much has changed. We feel lucky we got to enjoy the last few $20 reservation nights for a 4 night stay. No mice during our stay.To Jason W who was not happy about batteries and propane, always bring your own stuff. These items are not guaranteed or promised to be there. The USFS does not even promise wood will be there. Just trying to help you and others. If you want wood for the fire pit if you bring a chainsaw there is plenty of downed trees between the toilet and the creek. Thanks to the various people who left facial tissue, the fairy lights (We love them too!) and made the ax super sharp!Wood was well stocked but we even added more. We also left some D batteries and a fresh new propane canister. We try to be givers and not just takers. We looked for the bathtub but sadly it was missing. We thought it would be great to get a photo with snow in it.If somebody has a decent broom please being to leave in the toilet to keep it swept too.

The cabin would be a lot better if there was propane there and more lights when we got there there was no propane and the batteries were dead in there he lantern

Awesome place to spend a few days. We fished the creek and cooked delicious food over the wood stove. We brought all of our food and supplies in totes, which was awesome as there are quite a few mice who came to visit.

We stayed in the Moose Lake Cabin for a couple nights in late June-early July. It's a cute little cabin with easy access to the Middle Fork of Rock Creek and privacy from the main Moose Lake Road thanks to a row of willows and a dip in the landscape. The cabin itself and vault toilet were clean and well-stocked. We really liked the fact that screened windows on two sides open up and allow a cross breeze to keep the cabin cool and airy. We hope a new screen door will be installed (we could see the hinges and lock where earlier ones hung) for more light and air.

The only issue was, just like most of the old ranger stations and guard cabins on the ground, a little mouse or five who liked to come out at night and whenever we left the cabin in the day to gnaw and poo on our stuff. Fortunately, we always travel with sealed hard-sided plastic tubs for camp gear and food so there was no damage. Be aware to keep everything sealed in similar protective containers otherwise you'll have a dash of mouse seasoning in your food here at Moose Lake.

Really enjoyed our stay, we regularly camp in the area and have wanted to stay at the cabin for quite a while, and finally did. A few things: 1) the maul and hatchet were VERY dull, so much so that they actually bounced off the wood, we couldn't cut at all. We had brought a chain saw and used that to cut wood. Split wood would be better for the stove, so next time we will bring our own tools, or maybe our own wood. 2) The cabin is pretty small, and with the bunk beds, table, and wood stove, it gets full fast. There were two of us and we were fine, but a group of four would be pretty cozy if you were stuck inside. 3) We were going by the stove instructions on the wall behind the stove. Later we found written stove instruction on paper on the wall by the door. It would have saved some effort to read the paper instructions first - we aren't wood stove experts. But it was very enjoyable, weather was great, a beautiful area!!

We celebrated my 62nd birthday here and it was perfect. We caught a few fish and our grandson slept in a forest service cabin for the first time. I am sure we will do more of that.

Such a lovely little cabin right near the river. Lots to explore down the forest roads. We will put this one on our list of cabins to return to.
