Great cabin. Beware the sink (no water) drains to a bucket that must be dumped. Also the woodshed has a key lock so no wood. The Ranger said they would come open it, but they never did.

The area around the cabin is wonderful! Our stay was over a very cold spell of -14 degrees but we still enjoyed hiking in the area both days. We did wake every two hours to add wood to the fire in the bedroom as the stove is not well sealed and the wood burns completely down in two hours if you arent adding constantly. The cabin is adorable and clean but we did appreciate our electric heater due to extreme weather. Would definitely return.

Cabin was very nice however heating was not good, wood burning stove in bedroom was not effective at all, stove was insulated so was not radiating heat, neither was clean..we felt 20 degree all night due to single pane windows and terrible heating system..

Birch Creek Cabin is a great facility in a lovely setting. The beautiful little creek is close enough that you can hear it from the cabin. Its clean and clear-we used the water from it for washing up and dishes. Do bring your own drinking water though. The cabin is cozy and we were able to stay warm during 30 degree nights with a fire in the bedroom. We didnt tackle lighting the wood stove in the kitchen however. We brought a small space heater to take the chill off in the mornings. The kitchen had the bare minimum of cooking and eating utensils and dishes. We brought our own cast iron skillet and paper plates etc. Theres an electric range and refrigerator along with a big table and chairs in the kitchen. Theres a nice fire ring outside but there wasnt any wood so always bring your own just in case. We bought a few bunks down at the Safeway in Dillon and left our extra one for the next tenants. The pit toilet is a short walk up the hill. Bring a lantern or flashlight for late night trips. We didnt see any critters but there are warnings about bears and apparently people occasionally see mountain lions in the vicinity. This was our second trip to Birch Creek and we are already planning our next trip. Theres lots to do in the area and weve only just begun to explore!

Overall a charming and relaxing one-night experience. I got to see the resident mouse sneaking from the kitchen to the closet.

We had a great 5 days at Birch Ck. Weather was fantastic, sunny, low 70s and cool at night with one having light frost! We used the cabin as home base and rode our UTV each day as far north as Rock Ck and as far south as Kelly Lk. Hunting, fishing and taking pictures in between. The cabin was clean and cleaner when we left. The vault toilet was the same. The cabin did have some cooking utensils but they all seemed dirty. We had our own but washed most of what was there, yuk! Lots of flies but we managed them with fly strips, spray and swatter. No mop but we brought our own and left it, please use it and rinse it out for the next group. We didn't need to make a fire but if we did there wasn't much wood put out by the FS (I did ask the person on the phone in the Dillon FS office during my check-in if there was wood available!) Remember wood is NOT guaranteed! The kitchen sink does drain into a bucket even though it is plumbed to drain into a pipe that leads outside but the system LEAKS into the bucket. It was FULL when we arrived and had to dump it...........again yuk! No water and a well head just outside the back door.....................? Seems strange FS! We brought 10 gal and had another 10-gal container that we filled at the spring alongside the road so we had all that we needed. We made a shower stall in the toilet alcove and with our system had HOT showers every night, roughing it for sure! Sleeping accommodations where adequate for a family of four but definitely not privet for couples or a group of four friends. Lights, refrigerator, MR. Coffee was nice to have. The location of the cabin made it feel remote but access was easy. We (the two of us) would definitely return again!

This cabin was so much fun. There was wood stocked for the wood burning stove, and it was just secluded enough to feel like we had the whole place to ourselves, but only about 20 minutes from Dillon.

Our stay was short- only arrived around 3:00 day of stay and left at 11:00 next morning. It was crazy 60 mph cold wind and dusting of snow overnight. We didn't have time or weather to explore as much as I had hoped. We will definitely come back to hike and take the cool drives! The cabin is lovely, and always great to have electricity, range and refrigerator. We all gathered and spent the evening in the bedroom with camp chairs around the wood stove. The cook stove compartment in the kitchen is small and needs constant feeding. We enjoyed a short hike with the grandkids in the morning before packing up and heading out. I can see the creek would be great for the kids in the summer. Beautiful and interesting area. We will be back.

Beautiful little cabin, well stocked with dishes, cookware and a coffee pot. The description is confusing as it says electricity then it says no electricity. This cabin DOES HAVE ELECTRICITY. It has lights, an electric range with oven and a refridgerator. There was lots of wood in the storage. One wood stove in the bedroom and a wonderful old Monarch wood cooking stove in the kitchen for warmth and cooking. The fall colors were amazing, plenty of places to walk and hike. We had a great time and would definitely love to go back.

This is a very nice cabin. It was clean upon arrival, and cleaner when we left. Thank you FS for replacing the electric cook stove/oven....we were at this cabin in October 2021, the burners were iffy, and the oven didn't work at all. The new range/oven works great! We used the kitchen wood cook stove to take the chill off the room and also found that it worked wonderfully!
The pads on the bunks are a little hard, and the beds are noisy when rolling over and getting in/out of bed.....but, they are usable! The upper bunks could use a ladder at the foot for easier access for us older generation cabin users.
We did the short hike to Bond Lake which was an enjoyable hike.
We hit the fall colors perfectly, the aspens were in their full glory!!!

Really enjoyed seeing something new to us. Nice warm cabin when you can get the stove to work. We had a devil of a time lighting the cook stove in the kitchen and keeping it lit. A suggestion from us would be to have some directions available, easily seen, next to the stove for people that have never used one before. We use wood stoves all winter long but this one just didn't work for us. The wood available was sparce but enough for over night and the kindling might have been a litte damp, maybe some of our problem with the cookstove? It's awesome that a cabin like this is available to the public. We did stay at another FS cabin the night before, the price was way less. This one seems a bit spendy. The old CCC camp just above the cabin was very interesting. We will certainly visit the area again with more time to travel all the roads available.

There was no kindling, split wood or access to dry wood. 3 pieces o f kindling on porch in water bucket. Very large rounds by fire pit very wet from 3 days rain wood shed was locked one not sharp hatchet and a splitting maul.
Having rented cabins last year would have liked to been notified of potential price increase in time to respond. Read log book people not happy about it.
Loved the porch and cabin had a very nice stay, was clean and no mice.

Hooray! There is a brand new stove/oven now replacing the old unit where the oven did not work.
When we stayed previously wood was stacked by the fire pit. This time wood was stored in the building behind the cabin with access via a combination lock. Sadly people keep breaking the ax and splitting maul that the USPS supplies.
Brighter LED bulbs have been installed in the cabin.

Beautiful location and pretty easy to get to, even in winter, at least during our visit. Still plenty of solitude. There was ample snow for cross-country skiing, yet hikes were very doable as well. There was a fair amount of firewood and we kept the fireplace in the bedroom going as the low temp during our visit was -11F. The fireplace and down comforters kept us comfortable. The axe has seen better days and is one swing away from breaking. Next time we'll bring our own. The electric stove appeared brand new and worked well. No mice seen. We brought plenty of water. We really enjoyed the stay and look forward to visiting in different seasons. It was a great way to ring in the New Year!

Clean and the beds were quite comfortable. The fire place was small and requires constant attention. The wind howled the whole night. The fridge and the coffee pot were a surprise but we really enjoyed it! We will do it again!

Bring your own padlock for use on the back door while you are staying. We had the unsettling experience of finding the place had been unlocked by someone and left that way one afternoon while we were out. Creepy, though nothing was taken. Don't think you are the only one who knows the combination! They don't change it often enough! Mice are active. Bring your own dishes and cookware in a mouse-proof tote. Same with the food items that won't go in the fridge. Electric stove's oven does not work but top burners do. Look for pots stored in oven. Use wood stoves to keep hot water going all the time (wash water & humidity). We brought a crock pot, very useful. Top bunks are hazardous and hard to climb in and out. No siderails or handles. We brought a stepladder which helped but was still too short. Headroom between top and bottom bunks too short for adults to sit comfortably. We brought a cot, which was useful after one night braving an upper bunk. Bunks have cloth-covered box springs, and vinyl-covered foam pads on top of those. The box springs are grimy. Glad we brought brought fitted sheets and mattress pads which we used on the vinyl pads, with our sleeping bags on top. They still reeked after 2 nights. Bring drinking water. We got water to heat for washing from the creek, and went to the spring in the lower canyon to refill drinking water containers. There was a table lamp in the kitchen, which can be moved, but you might like to bring another for the bedroom. The overhead lights are bare LED or CFL bulbs, rather glaring cool spectrum for this cozy warm-colored cabin.
